It also includes student/group guidelines for the activity and contains a characterization chart for use in whole group or small group literature circle discussions, at literacy centers, or as individual reading assessments.
The chart can be printed or created by the student to complete during reading, in class or for homework.
It has really helped my students understand types of characterization, especially when used in group literature circle meetings!
In my class, I begin with the review of characterization and, for a different approach to literature discussions, I have them create a characterization chart. They usually do this on large bulletin board paper I've cut for them. They are talking about the text in no time!! It's an awesome way to get them to discuss a text AND discuss the aspects that teachers want them to discuss! Because they are identifying literary elements within novels they are currently reading, the concept sticks!
