Description

PDF File for Identifying Direct and Indirect Characterization. It is a versatile activity: Use in Small Groups (Literature Circles) or for an Independent Activity for Novels or Short Stories. This can be done as whole group too!

This item reviews Direct and Indirect Characterization, providing examples of each.
It also includes student/group guidelines for the activity and contains a characterization chart for use in whole group or small group literature circle discussions, at literacy centers, or as individual reading assessments.
The chart can be printed or created by the student to complete during reading, in class or for homework.

It has really helped my students understand types of characterization, especially when used in group literature circle meetings!

In my class, I begin with the review of characterization and, for a different approach to literature discussions, I have them create a characterization chart. They usually do this on large bulletin board paper I've cut for them. They are talking about the text in no time!! It's an awesome way to get them to discuss a text AND discuss the aspects that teachers want them to discuss! Because they are identifying literary elements within novels they are currently reading, the concept sticks!
