Description

RAISE AWARENESS AND INQUIRY! This product is intended to be used by teachers in order to raise awareness and inquiry behind the voting rights of Black people and women. Here are some suggested uses for the product.

Build Background Knowledge- It is suggested, to begin with, a KWL about what your students know about voting-past and present. This will help you to see what the students know and things they need to unlearn.

1st Video-Students will have a 4-minute video about Black Americans gaining the right to vote. This video will also provide students with a history of voting in Black Americans and present-day voter suppression.

Observe Pictures- Students will then observe pictures of Black Americans voting and fighting for voting rights. They will discuss the pictures and/or write their observations, questions, and inquiries.

Jigsaw & Reading- Students will read and complete a jigsaw about their reading about the women's vote and answer questions.

Mock Voting Activity- In your classroom, your students can create their own ballot box to use. They can use the ballots and the stickers to practice some mock voting in your classroom. Some examples of this would be a mock presidential election, a favorite character from a book vote, which read aloud to read next, etc…

Compare & Contrast- Students can compare and contrast the pictures in the Venn diagram, the texts in the document, the videos they watched, etc… There are two different formats to choose from.

Vocabulary- There is an important vocabulary that you will want to use and make sure students

are familiar with during your lessons on voting.

This product will challenge student thinking, their discussion, and their inquiry about voting, voting rights, and voter suppression. Thanks again for purchasing!
