- Google Slides™
Description
Students describe, read, and identify major key words as they relate to the history of hip hop in 1970s New York City. This literacy-based lesson builds students skills in reading context clues in order to identify proper content-specific vocabulary. A prior knowledge of hip hop is not required to teach this lesson. These pages can enhance any American music, history or social studies class, as well as build reading skills in any music or dance class. Additional video resources are included on the "For Teachers" page to support the vast and varied topic that is Hip Hop culture.
In this lesson, students start by inserting an image that represents hip hop to them on the cover page. Then students gain some insight into NYC subway life by describing what the see and wonder on the "See and Wonder" page. The roots of hip hop are described on the "Fill in the Blanks" page, where students use context-clues to match key words to the proper sentence. The definitions of these words are also included to support readers. The "Hip Hop Elements" page is a graphic organizer that allows students to identify the newly-defined 5 elements of hip hop as they match the key word to the description. A "Reflection" page at the end allows them to think critically and creatively about what they've just explored.
