Description

This cross-curricular product introduces students to the Colombian origins of cumbia music and dance. Students trace the African, indigenous, and European influences on cumbia's music and dance through reading, writing, and literacy activities. This lesson is perfect for Hispanic Heritage month, Black History month, Social Studies, World History or Global Studies courses, as well as works as a literacy support in music and dance classrooms.

Slide one is the cover page, encouraging students to activate prior knowledge by searching for their own images related to cumbia or Colombia. Slide two, "Cumbia on the Map," has students locate Colombia on the map, and then draw a line from their own location, to this country. Slide three, "Vocabulary," builds content-specific vocabulary, with students finding images that best represent each word. Slide four, "Reading Time," asks students to read, annotate using color-specific highlighting, and write a short response to a prompt. Slide five, "Instrument Roots," encourages students to apply what they've read, and sort each instrument into the appropriate ethnic origin category. Slide six, "Cumbia Reflection," contains three reflection questions for students to further their understanding of the content.
