Description
These Phonics Fast Reads are perfect for students who are learning to read and write words with the tricky bossy r spelling pattern. Each Fast Read includes real and nonsense words and comes with an optional paper/pencil word sort recording sheet. These decoding drills and repeated readings are designed to move students from slowly blending words to a level where decoding is habitual and automatic.
Included in this bundle:
- er, ir, ur
- ar
- or
- mix up
- word sort sheets (optional paper/pencil)
* The last few pages of each phonics drill includes more difficult/multi-syllable words. You can delete the slides if your students aren’t ready.
How can I use these drills in my classroom?
•Use them with individual students.
•Use them as a warmup in guided reading groups.
•Use them during distance learning – You can assign the Google Slides in your Google Classroom or use in Seesaw. If you use Seesaw your students can practice and then record themselves. (I’m REALLY excited about this feature! My students use Google Classroom, so I will be providing the Seesaw link in our Google Classroom!)
Why did I create these Fast Reads?
I created these cards for the first grade students in my own classroom. After introducing a new phonics pattern my students need practice reading and applying what they have just learned.
The Research
I created these Fast Reads to improve reading fluency. According the the National Reading Panel, a few things are critical of good reading instruction.
•Explicit instruction in phonemic awareness
•Systematic phonics instruction
•Methods to improve fluency
