Description

This file includes 95 word lists and corresponding activities for grades 1-3. The word lists are adapted from the “Words Their Way” approach to spelling. The “Words Their Way” assessment tool will help determine student instructional spelling levels and monitor progress. However, it is not necessary if other assessment tools gather similar information.
These lists vary in the number of words they contain. They are organized by level of difficulty; starting with short vowels and ending with prefixes and suffixes. Ninety-five different lists make it easy to differentiate for a variety of learners. These practice pages could be used in literacy centers, homework, or during small group instruction.
Practice pages containing letter shape boxes and word banks are available in short vowel, word family, digraph, blend, and long vowel lists. These pages encourage students to think about letter shape and placement. Cut and paste word sort practice pages are provided for all of the lists. These sorts help students to find and classify patterns within words. The “Take Home Lists” contain two copies of each list (mirrored) on a page. Cut them in half length-wise, and students can take a list home and keep one at school to practice.

*INTERESTED IN DIGITAL SORTS? No more time-consuming cutting, messy glues or lost pieces. Students, teachers and parents can always have access to the completed sorts.
