Dewey Decimal System Printable Unit - Slides, Videos, Packet, & 3 Assessments

Ready to introduce your students to the Dewey Decimal System? Then this unit plan is perfect for you! This plan covers a short introduction to the Dewey Decimal System and explains each of the 10 main classes with subtopics in each class and example books. The resource includes 12 different lessons, 3 assessments, and 3 exclusive teaching videos. Since there is a Pre-test and Post-test, this Unit works great as an SGO (Student Growth Objective). This is the print version of the unit plan, but there is a digital version available as well.

This unit plan includes 1 Google Drive folder with:

• 13 Google Slides presentations for the teacher to use in teaching the content (with answers to most questions included in the slides for easy review)
• Additional Teacher Google Slides including:
• Slides used in the Intro to DDC video (in case you want to present the material yourself rather than use the video)
• Slides used in the DDC Alien Story (in case you want to present the material yourself rather than use the video)
• DIY Google Slides Templates to use if you want to create additional or alternative slides
• 2 versions of printable student handouts (whole packet or individual handouts)
• 10 sheets of printable book cover stickers (in PDF format)
• Instructions for using these resources, sample lesson plans, and suggestions for SPED adaptations
• 3 assessments (in PDF format) to use as a Pretest, Practice Test, and Post Test

There are links to tailor made teaching videos embedded in the slides. The videos present all the information needed to answer the questions in the lesson, so the lessons could be completed independently. One video is titled “Intro to the Dewey Decimal System” and is linked in the Lesson 1 slide. There are two versions of the  “DDC Alien Story Video," one full length and one shortened. This video is a mnemonic device/ story to help students remember the 10 main classes in order.

The teacher slides present all the questions and their answers. Every lesson includes a Do Now that students should be able to answer independently. In the student packets/ handouts, students answer questions by circling their answer or by writing a short answer. Each of the 10 main classes has a page or 2 of sub topics included in that section and students sort book cover stickers into those categories. Book covers are printed onto address labels to make easy stickers or you could print on paper and have students cut and glue the book covers. The review lesson includes links to 3 online review games and a fun Dewey Decimal rap. When the unit is finished, the students' packets or booklets can be used as a guide to the Dewey Decimal sections to help them find what they are looking for.

There are 3 versions of the assessment with the same questions in the same format, just the order is mixed up. These are intended to be used as a Pretest, Practice Test, and Post Test.
