Description

Is the skill of identifying theme tricky for your students? These puzzles offer an engaging and hands-on way to practice theme with short stories!

Puzzles are not just for primary grades or math. These determining theme puzzles will not only allow your students to practice 4th/5th grade level theme skills, but they will also be engaged with the novel format.

About the Theme Activity

This reading center resource includes 18 theme puzzles to practice identifying the themes of fiction stories.

The themes in this center are not one-word themes. Instead, they are themes written as complete sentences.

Some of the stories will have similar themes as others. This makes it a great activity for the students to practice defending specific themes over others.

About the Printable Theme Puzzles

Three different direction versions are included to help you best use this resource for your students.

Version 1: The students will read each text, determine the theme, and then find the puzzle piece that matches.

Version 2: The students will read each text, determine the theme, write that theme in their words on their recording sheets, and then find the puzzle piece that best matches.

Version 3: This version is identical to Version 2, except optional distractor theme puzzle pieces are included.

Directions and specific recording sheets for the different versions can be found following the puzzle pieces. Answer keys are also included.

About the Digital Theme Puzzles

For the digital theme activity, the students will read three stories per slide and find the matching theme card.

To make this theme activity work in a digital format, the template has been modified and redesigned for optimal digital use. The content for the digital version is the same as the printable version.

There are TWO versions:

•Version 1 – Advanced – All 18 Theme choices are on each slide.

•Version 2- Scaffolded – Only 6 Theme choices are given on each slide.

These digital theme activities have been created for use with Google Slides. Please see the preview to see the digital theme puzzles (and the two versions).
