What educators are saying

This is my favorite project I've done all quarter! It was wonderful to see students' creativity and watch them take pride in their designs. It also allowed for us to work as a school to factor student voice into our decision making and reflect on adjustments we should make. Loved this! 10/10
My students enjoyed this activity soooo much! I had them work in pairs, put all their designs and questions on a poster board, and present. Students were so interested in how their classmates designed their spaces. I didn't need to make very many tweaks.

Description

This project-based learning activity is intended as a culminating project following a lesson on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. This project would be appropriate for a high school Psychology course or Social Studies course. I used this project with my Social Studies students as a culminating project after watching the documentary film, "The Bad Kids" (could also be used with "Stand and Deliver," "Lean on Me," or a similar film.

Step I:

In this exercise, students will connect what they've learned about Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs to education. Using their high school as a case study or a high school from a film such as “Stand and Deliver” or “Lean on Me,” they will complete a graphic organizer based on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.

Step II:

Students will plan and design a high school/campus that meets the needs of students at all five tiers of Maslow’s hierarchy. Using graph paper or a website such as https://floorplanner.com/, students will design a school/campus that incorporates the supports the components listed in step one of the exercise.

Step III: Essay.
