What educators are saying
I love everything about this. My kids enjoyed the project and I like that everything is done and ready to go. I didn't have to edit too much and it fit right in with a ELA unit we do. Very engaging.
Such a good resource for our medieval art unit. My 5th graders poured over the choices and spent a long time designing their own coat of arms. We put the finished product on watercolor paper and did a light gold wash of watercolor on the back. Turned out so good.
Description
With everything that we have to teach in a school year, interdisciplinary projects just make sense! This project meets expectations in Arts, Social Studies and Language Arts!
This is a great resource to teach your students about coat of arms and is perfect for your Medieval Times unit. It includes a handout that explains the purpose of a coat of arms. The assignment is laid out into 7 simple steps. Students will create a coat of arms using animals, symbols, colors and a motto that represent themselves or their family. A small image and meaning is included with each animal, symbol and color. Students can choose from 2 different shield shapes. Finally, they will write a short paragraph to explain their choices. The coat of arms for Ontario is included in the handouts as an example, however, students may benefit from seeing a variety of examples that can easily be
found on the Internet.
Included with this activity are student handouts, worksheets and a rubric for assessment.
