Description

Design Thinking in Art: Project Base Learning (great for STEAM collaboration)

This lesson teaches Design Thinking strategies to your students through project based learning. Design thinking is a method for inspiring innovation used by top marketing companies and product developers around the world. It solves real-world, complex problems, and finds desirable solutions for clients. A design mindset is not problem-focused, its solution focused and action oriented towards creating something people need or a product that helps solve a problem. You can learn more about design thinking here: Watch this Video or Read this article.

This method of learning through solving problems fosters multiple National Common Core Visual Arts Standards, a multitude of ISTE standards for students as well as positive character traits like empathy and understanding.

This approach is perfect for teaching art across the curriculum, collaborating with other content areas and developing robust, multifaceted STEAM lessons.

The project can be presented in two ways:

1. Allow students to seek out the needs of others and design a product that meets

those needs. This allows for students choice and empowered learning. Or…

2. Pose a problem you want students to design a solution for. This allows a more focused approach where students have a common goal. It can build a sense of community among classmates, especially if the solution they are seeking impacts someone or a group of people your students can relate to. Here is a great example of this in action.
