Description
The Descriptive Writing Unit includes discussion cards, games, and other writing activities to teach students about descriptive writing. (Includes 11 files below)
1) Describe It! Discussion Cards: In this activity students orally describe a given topic. Great introductory activity!
2) Shades of Words Signs: A set of 10 signs to display with word choice suggestions for commonly overused words. (Includes signs for the words walk, eat, sleep, speak, throw, nice, skinny, angry, hot, and cold.)
3) Trashcan Thesaurus: Students make a thesaurus to "throw away" overused words in writing. (Includes thesaurus cover and entry word page)
4) Describe It! Adjective Game: A game to practice describing given objects using adjectives. (Includes 26 gamecards and directions)
5) Descriptive Writing Prompt Cards: Prompt cards for students to practice descriptive writing. Great for writing centers! (Includes 37 cards)
6) My Special Place Activity: Students write a description of their special place in this activity. (Includes prewriting and publishing pages)
7) Show Not Tell Activity: In this activity students write sentences describing and illustrating a given feeling. (Includes 20 feeling cards)
8) Name That Description! Boardgame: A boardgame to practice identifying descriptive strategies. (Includes gameboard, 40 gamecards, directions, and an answer key)
9) My Pet Monster Craftivity: Students create and describe pet monsters in this descriptive writing activity. Great display! (Includes prewriting and publishing pages)
10) Life in a Snow Globe Craftivity: Students describe what life would be like inside of a snow globe. Great display! (Includes snow globe template, prewriting, and publishing pages)
11) Hot Cocoa Simile Craftivity: Students use similes to describe a mug of hot cocoa. Great display! (Includes mug template, publishing page, and a sign to hang with the display)
