Description

This Deriving the Quadratic Formula FUN Notes resource will help your students explore step by step how the Quadratic Formula is derived and, in addition, give them lots of extra practice using the Quadratic Formula.

Students have always had difficulty deriving the Quadratic Formula, but now with this great interactive resource they will breeze right through it and grasp the concepts. The FUN Notes have step-by-step directions and can be used for Homework, assessment, or enrichment.

The derivation method is complete the square. When done, or while working, students can doodle on the page, taking notes and eventually personalizing it by coloring. Doodling has been shown to keep students focused and on task. This is especially true in mathematics.

Some problems include complex answers. Answer Key Included. For Interactive Notebooks, print at 80%.

Solve quadratic equations in one variable.
Use the method of completing the square to transform any quadratic equation in 𝘹 into an equation of the form (𝘹 – 𝘱)² = 𝘲 that has the same solutions. Derive the quadratic formula from this form.
Solve quadratic equations by inspection (e.g., for 𝘹² = 49), taking square roots, completing the square, the quadratic formula and factoring, as appropriate to the initial form of the equation. Recognize when the quadratic formula gives complex solutions and write them as 𝘢 ± 𝘣𝘪 for real numbers 𝘢 and 𝘣.
