Description

Decimal Project for 6th Grade

Students work in pairs on this decimal project to show an understanding of adding decimals, subtracting decimals, multiplying decimals and dividing decimals.

For this project, students work in pairs to plan and order food for a fictitious party. In doing so, this project allows students to show their understanding of decimal operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. After making the appropriate calculations, the students create a receipt showing the total cost and calculate the amount left from the $600 budgeted for food for the party.

Project Pacing: The project is designed to be completed in two or three forty-five minute periods. However, the project may be introduced during class and completed at home. Prior to working on the project, be sure each student is provided ample time to retrieve a catering menu from a restaurant or a digital version of a menu online.

Set-up/Materials: Students will need access to computers for this project if the final receipt will be typed. If students are handwriting the receipt, no devices are needed unless students will be using the internet to find menus. Each student will edit a copy of the Google Slide Template. The slide is set up to print on 8.5” by 11” paper. Students can customize by changing fonts and adding the restaurant logo and images of food items purchased. After customizing the page, students print the final receipt to hand write their work for the mathematics.

Required Materials:

-glue sticks or liquid glue

-scissors (optional)

-restaurant menu (students can bring them in or teacher can supply digital or print menus)
