Decades Project APUSH or US History End of Year Activity - High School History

One of my fondest memories of a class project was doing a decades project in my own APUSH class... a few decades ago! In this fun and creative end of the year project, students will research their chosen or assigned decade and create a performance that brings that decade alive.

Students will research pop culture, fashion, slang, important celebrities, inventions, and more.

All instructions, rubrics, worksheets, etc. are ready to go in this no-prep end of the year project. The instructions and rubrics are editable, so you can tailor this to fit the needs of your class.

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

This decades project is a chance for students to have some fun as they learn about what life was like for the average American throughout the decades.

Each student should receive a copy. You can also create a separate document by selecting those slides (CTRL + click), going to “File,” and clicking “make a copy” → “selected slides”

Student Research Sheets ……………………………………………………….. Pgs 8 - 26

Each student should receive a copy of their decade’s note sheet (2 pages for each decade). These can be filled out digitally by typing into the boxes or can be printed to be completed by hand.

Decade Summary Sheet ……………………………………………………….. Pgs 27 - 31

Each student should receive a copy. You can also create a separate document by selecting those slides (CTRL + click), going to “File,” and clicking “make a copy” → “selected slides” 

The rubric is at the end of this section as well because you may want to have students turn it in with their notes to make your grading more efficient. 

TIPS:

If you want to give students a complete packet with the entire project in one packet, you can print pages 6 - 7 and 28 - 31 for all students. Then, have students attach their individual note sheets to that packet.

It is suggested you allow students 1-2 class periods for research, 1-2 class periods to plan their performance, and at least a week of outside class time to record or practice the performance on their own.

You will also need to allow 1 class periods for the performances. I suggest breaking it up over 2 days so it is not information overload.

POSSIBLE MODIFICATIONS:

Not as keen on live or recorded performances? You can have students create a Museum Display on a trifold with “artifacts” from the time. Make sure to modify the rubric if you choose to go this route.
