Description
Help your students with hearing loss feel comfortable in advocating for themselves! This activity facilitates self-advocacy for deaf students in a school environment, by helping them learn to and share about their hearing loss with peers and teachers.
Assist your students in creating a personalized slideshow about them and their hearing loss, which they can then confidently use as a tool for self-advocacy. The EDITABLE presentation makes it easy and quick to fill in text boxes and add your own pictures.
This is a functional activity to help students connect with their hearing loss, increase confidence at school, and educate their teachers and classmates about deafness and hearing loss.
The editable 49-slide presentation contains information about:
✅ Normal hearing vs. hearing loss
✅ Audiologists & audiograms
✅ Frequency of hearing loss & famous people with hearing loss
✅ Hearing technology such as cochlear implants, hearing aids, BAHAs, sound field systems, and DM/FM systems
✅ Strategies to help communicate more effectively with people who are deaf
✅ 10 quiz questions about hearing loss to ask the audience
2 digital versions are included:
- PowerPoint™
- Google Slides™
The slide backgrounds of the presentations are fixed (not editable), but several elements of the presentation are intended to be edited:
- Fill in text boxes with student-specific information, such as type of hearing loss.
- Add images, such as a picture of when the student first received their device.
- Plot the student's audiogram to show aided hearing levels as they compare to environmental sounds.
- Insert extra slides with any additional information the student wants to include.
- Delete slides that don't apply or may be too detailed for younger audiences.
After working with your student to complete the presentation, you and your student can give the presentation to a class or a small group of friends or teachers. Being able to share about hearing loss and hearing technology is one that will benefit your student (and their classmates) for a lifetime by building awareness, acceptance and confidence!
SLPs and teachers like you have said....
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Laura K. says, "I love using this PowerPoint with my students! When you’re an itinerant teacher on the go, it’s awesome to have resources that are high quality, relevant, and quick and easy to use. Thanks for always creating things that are so usable!"
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Katherine C. says, "Best resource I've ever purchased on TPT! So much work went into making this beautiful, professional-looking slide show! I really like that students can personalize the presentation with their own information, and even add pictures of themselves or their technology if they want to. It's long slide show because it has so much good information, but you can delete whatever you don't want, and make it short for younger students. My students are using this presentation at the beginning of each school year, to tell their classmates about their hearing loss."
