I really found this resource to be very helpful when discussing and teaching about Day of the Dead to my 4th graders! I was able to utilize this for a Social Studies unit !
Such a fun way to talk about and actually create meaningful art for the Day Of The Dead! My K-3 classroom loved this

Description

Are you looking for engaging Day of the Dead activities for kids to celebrate Día de los Muertos in the classroom? Your first and second grade students can learn about the holiday in Mexico and their traditions, vocabulary, and symbols with this easy to use resource. They’ll make a colorful sugar skull craft that’s perfect for a Day of the Dead bulletin board.

Use the printables at a thematic center or use them for individuals, partners, or small groups, or whole class.

Includes printable vocabulary cards in English and Spanish that are perfect for a pocket chart activity. The Day of the Dead information poster and two student booklets help students understand the meaning of the holiday. Your students use the fold up booklet and graphic organizers to write about and share what they learn.

Most activities are NO PREP and easy to use. Students will love creating their own Día de los Muertos sugar skull! They can cut and glue colored shapes onto the skull or color them to create a bright and colorful sugar skull. Pair the craft with one of the writing activities for an October or November bulletin board display.

Here’s what you’ll get:

  • information posters
  • graphic organizers
  • picture vocabulary posters
  • booklets
  • sugar skull craft
  • word search
  • poetry & letter writing
  • pocket chart vocabulary words (English and Spanish)
  • Day of the Dead writing paper

Ideas for Use:

This resource provides a variety of writing prompts and activities that can be used in October and November for a social studies mini unit on the meaning of the holiday.

  • The packet is perfect for whole class instruction.
  • Many of the activities (compare & contrast, making words, nouns, verbs, and adjectives, pocket chart vocabulary cards, etc.) are great partner activities.
  • Use the printables at a thematic center.

Your students will love learning about other cultures and their holidays. Some of your students may experience these traditions in their own homes. They can contribute to the understanding of the holiday and the significance to their families.

The prep is easy. Most student pages are print and go. The materials needed for the craft are just colored paper, scissors, and glue.

Teacher Tip: Laminate the posters and cards for repeated use.
