What educators are saying

I loved using this with my 4th grade students. The visuals were extremely helpful for my ESOL and SpEd students!
My students found this super engaging! It helped them learn how you can tell if it is day or night and what season it was. They really liked that if they got it wrong, then they could try again.

Description

Looking to get students engaged in the abstract concept of Day & Night and Seasons being caused by the position of Earth? This task card activity will have students visualizing the Earth's tilt and which side is facing the sun.

Goal: students will clear up common misconceptions of the position of the Earth and seasons, day and night. Students will understand that seasons are not caused by the Earth being closer or further away from the sun but rather by the tilt of the Earth. Students will also understand that day and night are caused by the rotation of the Earth and not the sun moving.

Printable Version: 16 task cards, and 2 detailed diagrams for students to color and fill in.

Digital Version: students start by clicking through 5 detailed pages of notes and visuals showing them the position of Earth for day and night and each season (Winter & Summer). They then move into the task cards Self-Checking: Students test their understanding with task cards. They are provided with 10 opportunities to practice their knowledge. (These are the same as the first 10 task cards of the printable version)

When students answer incorrectly they are provided with an explanation as to why they are incorrect then directed back to the question to try again.

When answered correctly they are congratulated and sent to the next question.

This activity sends students directly to present mode, they click on correct answers and work their way through the slides. At the end they are encouraged to try the adventure again if they struggled with the concept.

**The slideshows have also been newly updated to make clicking on answers easier for students. There should be fewer accidental next-page clicks. **

Use this as a whole class instruction before having students complete our paper version on their own, or on an interactive whiteboard. Use as a check for understanding at the end of a lesson. Because of the detailed notes and directions, these also work great for students in need of intervention or extra practice.
