Each set of Doodle Notes includes:

    • Illustrated pages in the following versions:
      • Open response for higher challenge
      • Scaffolded with fill-in-the-blanks for support
      • Black and white, perfect for coloring in
      • Color versions for digital assignments

    • A completed example for modeling
    • An answer key presentation - Google Slides & PowerPoint options
    • A quick start guide

Content covered in my DNA Doodle Notes Unit:

    • The Structure of DNA: Location & structure of DNA - components of a nucleotide, complementary base pairs, bonding, double helix, DNA studies and discoveries - Miescher, Levene, Chargaff, Watson & Crick (mention of Franklin but not covered in depth), Application of Chargaff's rule
    • DNA Replication: Why DNA replication happens, the process of DNA replication - enzymes and molecules included: helicase, topoisomerase, single-stranded binding proteins, RNA primase, primers, DNA polymerase, exonuclease, ligase. (note that I have structured the slides so that you can delete any stages and labels for enzymes that aren't required for your curriculum), why DNA replication is semi-conservative
    • Protein Synthesis: Structure of RNA, comparison of RNA to DNA, what protein synthesis is and why it is important, the process of protein synthesis: transcription and translation, using mRNA codon charts to work out amino acids
    • Mutations: DNA mutations: substitution, insertion and deletions. Effects of mutations: silent mutations, nonsense mutations, missense mutations. Chromosomal mutations: aneuploidy, translocation, duplication, inversion and deletion
    • Regulation of Gene Expression: What it is and why it is important, mechanisms of regulating gene expression: transcription factors, DNA methylation, histone acetylation, operons - with the example of the lac operon, interfering RNA.

    NGSSMS-LS3-1
Develop and use a model to describe why structural changes to genes (mutations) located on chromosomes may affect proteins and may result in harmful, beneficial, or neutral effects to the structure and function of the organism. Emphasis is on conceptual understanding that changes in genetic material may result in making different proteins. Assessment does not include specific changes at the molecular level, mechanisms for protein synthesis, or specific types of mutations.
    NGSSHS-LS1-1
Construct an explanation based on evidence for how the structure of DNA determines the structure of proteins, which carry out the essential functions of life through systems of specialized cells. Assessment does not include identification of specific cell or tissue types, whole body systems, specific protein structures and functions, or the biochemistry of protein synthesis.
