Culture shock – A punchline or a problem? - Lesson description

Our cultural background determines what feels right and normal to us. When we travel to a new culture, we try to process new experiences through our original cultural system which has not yet learned how to understand and interpret the new cultural clues. Culture shock is a double uprooting - being disconnected from the country of origin, and from the host country as well.

The result is a temporary condition of stress and disorientation we experience on our way to becoming bicultural.

ESL students are very familiar with this phenomenon and love to discuss it and give examples from their personal experiences. This lesson provides several interesting talking points on this topic and will challenge your students to use their vocabulary skills.

Part one – In this part, we examine “culture shock” piece by piece to its smallest elements. Students will learn to recognize “culture shock behavior” in different aspects of life. They will be asked to identify this behavior in themselves and also in newcomers, arriving in their country for the first time.

Part two – In this part, we learn about the five stages of culture shock, its symptoms, how to prepare yourself for culture shock, and the possible damages it presents. We also discuss reverse culture shock and its consequences.

The fact that I can actually do this job is first and foremost a testament to the open-mindedness (or desperation brought on by the long economic recession) of the schools that hired me over the years despite this very evident drawback, to the parents that tolerated grammar mishaps, and most of all to my beautiful students who have learned to “always double-check their teacher” and have come up with the sweetest, most heart-warming and diplomatic ways of pointing out my spelling errors (putting to great use their newly-acquired conditional capacity: “I’m not sure, but, I think I might have spotted…”)
