    Description

    Overview:

In this packet are two formats of my Crenshaw novel study: one is a pdf (which can also be uploaded as an Easel digital product) and the other is on google slides. It's versatility is intended for the teacher who wants to have the option of a printable product or one that can be presented and interacted with digitally (the google slides version includes fillable text boxes). Purchasing the bundle costs less than purchasing the two products separately. Included in each version is a no-prep, custom-made novel study for students in grades 4-6 who are reading the 2015 novel, Crenshaw, written by Katherine Applegate. This packet of materials includes 23 student worksheets , an answer key, a list of vocabulary words found in the reading, and a chart showing CCSS that are supported. The student pages encourage close reading and guide students as they read and practice important reading and writing skills.

Skills that are addressed include the following:

    demonstrating comprehension

    increasing vocabulary

    using inference

    citing textual evidence

    making connections to the reading

    recognizing literary devices:

metaphors, similes, hyperbole, personification, idioms, onomatopoeia, & flashback

    noticing character traits

    comparing & contrasting

    recognizing theme and author's purpose

    identifying setting and plot

    writing to express opinions

    writing a summary

    conducting research

    CRENSHAW in a Nutshell:

Ten-year-old Jackson worries that, once again, his family cannot afford the rent and will soon be hungry and without a home. But fortunately for Jackson, his old imaginary friend, Crenshaw, seems to be back! Students will enjoy Crenshaw's antics and will be rooting for the friendship that he offers to help Jackson in his time of need.

This book is written by the 2013 Newbery Medal-Winning author, Katherine Applegate, who is widely known not only for The One and Only IVAN and The One and Only BOB, but also for her Animorph books.
