Description
Build vocabulary with these context clues worksheets! These worksheets will provide your upper elementary students with practice using context clues to define unknown words. As your fourth- and fifth-grade students complete the worksheets in this packet, they will be introduced to the five types of context clues: synonyms, antonyms, definitions, examples, and inference clues. Each worksheet has an instructional component that is followed by multiple practice opportunities for each type of context clue. It also includes two exit tickets that can be used as you and your students progress through your context clues unit. In all, 53 practice items are included in this resource!
This worksheet packet targets the following context clues:
- Pages 1 and 2 (that I would make into a 2-sided worksheet) focus on context clues that fall into the DEFINITIONS and ANTONYMS categories. The worksheet begins with explanations of the two clues, and then there are 14 practice problems where students determine the meaning of the word AND explain which type of clue was given in the sentence.
- Pages 3 and 4 focus on the clues that fall into the SYNONYMS and INFERENCE categories. Again, this 2-sided worksheet begins with explanations of the two clues, and then there are 14 practice problems where students determine the meaning of the word AND explain which type of clue was given in the sentence.
- Page 5 focuses only on EXAMPLE clues. Students read each sentence and determine the meaning of the underlined word. They also highlight the example clues in each of the 8 sentences.
- Page 6 includes all five types of context clues and is therefore intended to be used for review. It includes 13 sentences containing underlined words, and 13 definitions. Students must match the definition to the appropriate underlined word.
Some of the words include: diminutive, toil, saunter, commence, pensive, summit, boisterous, bold, devour, incensed, frolic, massive, and elated.
Answer keys are also included.
********This resource is available in two formats:
- Traditional Printables- Print the PDF and distribute paper copies to your students to complete.
- Easel Activity- I created a new, colorful version for this digital format. Students can complete this activity on a device. Students read each sentence or paragraph and use context clues to identify the meaning of the underlined word. Students type their answers into text boxes.
