What educators are saying

This resource was an effective way to review the parts of a short story with my freshman. They were challenged but still learned the material.

Description

This file includes the tried and tested lesson plan, handouts, and extras for use in teaching "Contents of a Dead Man's Pocket" by Jack Finney. Using both Common Core 9-10 and Tennessee State English I Standards, this plan will help teach and assess characterization with emphasis on inference.

Specific Standards Addressed as Focus:
Common Core ELA 9-10
• 9.RL.3 Analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple or conflicting motivations) develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme.
• 9.RL.5 Analyze how an author’s choices concerning how to structure a text, order events within it (e.g., parallel plots), and manipulate time (e.g., pacing, flashbacks) create such effects as mystery, tension, or surprise.

Tennessee State English I State Performance Indicators:
SPI 3001.8.4 Identify and analyze how the author reveals character (i.e., what the author tells us, what the other characters say about him or her, what the character does, what the character says, what the character thinks).

Other review objectives include plot, determining conflict and conflict resolution, setting, and theme analysis.
