What educators are saying

This resource provided an excellent opportunity for my students to learn and explore the talents and achievement of so many indigenous role models. It was a very valuable purchase and will be used again.

Description

Highlight the important contributions of contemporary Indigenous leaders with this research activity. Each pennant has the name of an Indigenous person who is a leader in their field, whether that be art, music, politics, or activism. Students research the leader on their pennant and display key information using a conbination of images and writing. At the end of this research activity you will have a finished pennant to display and use as an anchor for class discussions.

Included leaders (24 total): Wab Kinew, Douglas Cardinal, Alanis Obomsawin, Daphne Odjig, Elijah Harper, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Stephen Kakfwi, Murray Sinclair, A Tribe Called Red, Judge Marion Buller, Kent Monkman, Susan Aglukark, Harry Laforme, Theresa Spence, Chief Wilton Littlechild, Perry Bellegarde, Phil Fontaine, Judy Wilson-Raybould, Marie Wilson, Eugene Arcand, Waneek Horn-Miller, Ellen Gabriel, Rebekah Uqi Williams, and Roberta Jamieson.

A note on terminology: I use the term Indigenous rather than Aboriginal throughout the product to refer to First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples.

*Please be advised that some students might find the material they come accross in their research challenging. For instance, testimonies from residential school survivors, footage from the Oka Crisis, or the revealing nature of Kent Monkman's art. Be availible to supervise students and guide them as they come to you with questions about what they learn.*
