Description

Constitution Day for High School and Upper Middle School activity and worksheet introduces students to the Preamble, Constitutional Convention, Checks and Balances, Civil Discourse and the value of Fairness as a moral imperative.

Constitution day is the day we celebrate the signing of our Constitution and learn about its core values. All schools receiving Federal funds are required to teach students about the U.S. Constitution on that day. This lesson is appropriate for Upper Middle School and High School Social Studies or English classes. It will help students understand the purpose and importance of a constitution, the value of civil discourse and fairness. This activity is takes a different approach to teaching the constitution, we want the students to understand the Constitution not just as the Supreme Law of the land, but to also understand that fairness is a guiding moral principal to carry throughout their lives.

Common Core-aligned, student-focused, interactive lesson is tethered to three essential questions:

1. What do you think is the most important part of the Constitutional Preamble?

2. Why is the U.S. Constitution important?

3. Why is fairness a moral value?

The Constitution Preamble

This packet contains the preamble to the Constitution, one single sentence that introduces who is in charge and whom the Constitution serves. Students are provided a think – pair – share activity challenging them to think about a phrase within the preamble most meaningful to them. Students will discuss their perspectives with a classmate, then share their ideas with the class.

Fairness is the Cornerstone of the Constitution

In order to understand how our forefathers created the Constitution, students must understand the value of fairness, open communication and the duty to respect every person as an individual. Our forefathers understood they could not get everything they wanted and that the Constitution would change as the needs of the country changes. They also understood the value of being fair to each other. Fairness is the product of moral judgement – the process by which people determine what is morally right and what is morally wrong. Just as our nation has changed, so have our morals. This activity was designed to encourage students to think deeply about why fairness is a value, and how that value is embedded in the structure and function of the Constitution.

Google Slides Included

One Google Slideshow is linked in the activity. Google Slides will provide your class with a a video published by The National Constitution Center. This video introduces students to concept of Civil Dialogue, and why it is important for all members of society to speak openly and freely.

Checks and Balances Quiz - Digital and Paper

Students are provided information text about the constitution and one worksheet testing their knowledge of the balance of powers.

Civil Dialog in Practice

The final activity derives from the video provided by The National Constitution Center.

Students will be provided one challenging moral question, they will learn the process of civil discourse and how to disagree with their classmates in the spirit of the Constitution. After completing Civil Dialog in Practice students are presented with a final think – pair- share activity that will challenge them to consider an uncomfortable moral question. After students completed this think-pair-share activity, present the final Google slide and ask the students to share their views.
