Description

Opinion writing is an important part of the Common Core Standards, requiring students to read news articles much more deeply than ever before, and find a way to respond to them with a clearly stated and well-supported opinion.

Do you have a class subscription to a newsmagazine? Do you discuss current events at morning meeting or social studies times? If you do, writing a letter to the editor is a writing activity that you may want to add to your lesson plans.

Included in this product, you will find a lesson plan for both a short one paragraph letter to the editor and a longer three or more paragraph response. There is a rubric for each type of response and a graphic organizer, as well as long and short student sample pages.
