Computer-Aided Design - Basic Assembly Tools
- Zip
- Internet Activities
Description
This mini-unit teaches students how to get started with CAD using Onshape. Onshape is a free, browser-based CAD software that is a great alternative to Autodesk or Tinkercad. It offers the professional, parametric approach to CAD that Autodesk offers while allowing students to create 3D models from any device (Windows, Mac, ChromeOS, smart phone) connected to the internet.
This introductory section is great for absolute beginners to CAD as well as those who have used other software in the past. It contains step by step instructions with screen captures of the software to help students visualize the process.
Skills covered:
-Importing an existing 3D model
-Mating parts
-Degrees of freedom
-Assembling basic shapes (rectangles, parallelograms, and triangles)
3 basic assignments and a design activity are also given, in addition to all 3D models needed for assembly. All assignments listed are linked to a working document on Onshape to allow the students to see the finished product in 3 dimensions.
