  • Reteach or remediation
  • Small group math intervention
  • Tutoring or homeschool
  • Test-prep

What does this “Comparing Fractions using Benchmarks” lesson cover?

  • Students use zero, one-half, and one whole as benchmarks to compare fractions using only estimation skills.
  • They learn tricks and number hacks to recognize big fractions, medium-sized fractions, and small fractions
  • Using estimation, students sort fractions into these categories and place them on a number line

This "Comparing Fractions using Benchmarks" lesson is designed for 3rd or 4th grade and is common core aligned to 3.NF.3d or 4.NF.2 (Comparing & Ordering Fractions).  However, it could easily be used as a review for 5th - 8th grade math.  I’ve taught every grade in middle school and never have I ever had a group come to me with a true mastery of comparing & ordering fractions.

Let’s face it, fractions are tough!!  You and I both know that if students don’t have a strong foundational understanding of fractions, they will be on the struggle bus for every math class from here on out.  This “Comparing Fractions using Benchmarks” lesson is the gift that keeps on giving.  Every subsequent thing you teach will be easier from this point forward!

Recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions, (e.g., 1/2 = 2/4, 4/6 = 2/3). Explain why the fractions are equivalent, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as 1/2. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
