Description

This is a 36-page document classifying the skills presented in the Common Core State Standards language strand. As an instructional coach who works with teachers in grades 6-12, I had difficulty quickly referencing what students should know when they enter a particular grade and what should be new material delivered in a particular grade. In order to avoid flipping back and forth in the dense standards document, I created a cumulative language skills document. I began with Kindergarten and classified skills in categories, including capitalization, punctuation, parts of speech, sentence level, vocabulary level, and conceptual level. For 1st grade, I carried the Kindergarten standards over and inserted the 1st grade standards in bold. For 2nd grade, I carried the Kindergarten and 1st grade standards over and inserted the 2nd grade standards in bold. I continued this process all the way through 12th grade. Teachers can use this skills document to determine what skills to pre-assess students on, determine students' language skills deficiencies, and guide planning and lesson design based on the CCSS language strand.
