Description

Are you new to teaching social studies and need a quick overview of what to teach? Or maybe you're a veteran but looking for a quick refresher? Whatever your need, these notes are for you. Revised and up to date on Texas TEKS.

Quick Disclaimer- This product was created for teacher use only. As a history teacher and mentor, I know how hard it is to find the "Cliff Notes" version for each unit of American History that you need to teach, especially if you teach multiple subjects. Time is not always our friend in the education world, which is why I decided to make my notes available for use. I have been fortunate enough to only teach American History for the past 6 years and each year I reuse these notes with my class, editing when needed to accommodate any new standards. (These notes align with Texas' TEKS standards). Please be aware that since these notes are from my class spiral that I use while I teach, there may be a spelling error here or there- please forgive any grammar or spelling errors that you may notice.

About the Notes:

  • My notes will always go in chronological order. To properly teach history, it's important that the events are in chronological order so students can see the correlation between each cause and event situation.

  • Studies show that color coding your notes for your students can help them make connections to what they are learning, thus retaining more of it! This is why you will see lots of different colors and "quick sketches" in my notes. It should be noted that the only particular color that I keep consistent all year long is the color orange. In my class, orange signifies an important person (or "character" as we like to call them). Students know that when we use this color, there will also be a section in the notes with a picture and description of the person as well.

  • When I introduce a country in my notes, the color that I choose to write in will match the color that I use to color that country with on the map.

  • Since history is nothing but an interesting story, I divide and teach each unit into the same 5 literary categories each time-
  • 1. Every story must start with the introduction of the characters (typically the countries involved) and the setting. This is important because it sets the stage for why certain characters do certain things.
  • 2. The "rising action" is the causes for the war.
  • 3. Then you have the typical "problem" or issue that can't get solved.
  • 4. The "falling action" is the key battles or events that take place
  • 5. The "solution" typically is the treaty that is signed to end the war.

  • These notes are used and referenced for all of my daily assignments, review games, and assessments.

  • I do teach my students that your notes are for YOU to read and my notes are for ME to read and they don't always need to be copied or written exactly the same. I also explain to them the use of "shorthand" notes and how sometimes it's appropriate to use an abbreviated form of writing for yourself, as long as you can remember what it meant. For example, I often use the abbreviation "NA" instead of writing out Native Americans every time.
