Description

This is a lesson focused on colons and semicolons, originally created for the high school level - but it can easily be tweaked for younger students! In this lesson, I focused on the two main uses for colons (used before a list that comes after a complete sentence, and before and explanation that comes after a complete sentence) and the two main uses for semicolons (as a "super comma" in a list of items that contain commas already, and to separate two independent clauses). This lesson includes both a PowerPoint presentation and a Word document with an accompanying handout (a version with blanks for students to fill in as well as a version with the answers). To teach this lesson, allow students to take notes on the handout as you use the PowerPoint to provide humorous and helpful images as well as interactive practice throughout the lesson.
