    Socratic Seminar Lesson Plan

    Description

Help your students understand whether college is worth it, types of college degrees, types of colleges, their options after high school, how to pay for college, how to choose a college, how to ask for a letter of recommendation, and how to apply to college with these interactive Google Slides presentations with Pear Deck Add-on slides!

⭐️ Also included (extension activities without Pear Deck): "How to Choose a College Worksheets," "College Research Project," "College Pennant Research Project," "Senior-Year College-Readiness Checklist," and "College Terms Word Search."

⭐️ Click here to learn more about Pear Deck or watch this video!

⭐️ Pear Deck is a great Google Slides Add-on to get more student participation and make your presentation more interactive!

⭐️ FREE BONUS INCLUDED: Socratic Seminar Lesson Plan -- Improve your students' critical thinking and communication skills with this interactive Google Slides presentation -- a complete lesson on carrying out a Socratic Seminar, including a Socratic Seminar definition, Socratic Seminar self-assessment rubric, rules for Socratic Seminar, Socratic Seminar sentence starters/frames, AND moderator question frames.

⭐️ There are Pear Deck slides with questions at the beginning of the Google Slides presentations to activate students’ prior knowledge, questions throughout the presentations, and higher-level questions at the end to stimulate critical thinking. The presentations will open in Google Slides, but you will need to get the Pear Deck Add-on if you don't already have it. It's very easy to use and you can just get the free version!

⭐️ These interactive presentations can be used with distance learning, face-to-face instruction, OR a blended, hybrid, or flipped learning approach in an English language arts (English Learners included), AVID, Advisory, or Life Skills class. Counselors can also use these slides to give a college readiness presentation to a large audience or help students one-on-one or in small groups.

⭐️ The time it takes for each lesson will vary depending on how much discussion and other extension activities you include. You and/or your students can get through one presentation in one class, or you might spend two to three days or more on it if you assign the extension activities. Instructional time also depends on your students’ levels.

    NOTES:

⭐️ EACH OF THESE PRODUCTS IS ALSO SOLD SEPARATELY!

⭐️ If you would like these same presentations without the Pear Deck slides, they can be found in my store:

    Options after High School

    Is College Worth It?

    How to Pay for College

    How to Choose a College

    Types of College Degrees

    Types of Colleges

How to Ask for a Letter of Recommendation

    How to Apply to College

⭐️ I also have this College Readiness Bundle with the same Google Slides without the Pear Deck Add-On and a few other products included (e.g., personal statement and scholarship essay writing, how to get into college, and college entrance exams).

⭐️ If you are also teaching career readiness, get this College and Career Readiness Pear Deck Bundle instead because it includes the same products in this bundle plus career readiness lessons.

⭐️ These lessons have it all:

    • Explicit instruction: Lessons are direct and systematically chunked following a 5E lesson plan and guide students with a clear purpose/essential question, explanation, and supported practice/extension.
    • 21st-century skills: Students use media and technology literacy skills with these interactive Google Slides presentations and use critical thinking, collaboration, and communication with all the opportunities for discussion.
    • Multi-modalities and hands-on learning: Students view and/or listen to the presentations, write and talk about their learning in “think-write-pair-shares” and discussion groups, and possibly more depending on what you assign in the extension, such as producing an essay or video to demonstrate understanding and synthesizing ideas.
    • Differentiation: Depending on students’ levels, you could present to the class as a whole and/or assign students to view the slides independently or in small groups and answer the questions as you see fit.
    • Scaffolding: These complete lessons come in manageable parts, from activating prior knowledge to reflection and assessment, and can be teacher- or student-paced.
    • Higher levels of questioning: The discussion questions require higher-level thinking such as analysis, evaluation, and synthesis.
    • Real-life connection: The college and career-readiness topics and essential questions are meaningful and relevant to students’ futures.
    • Student choice: To add student choice, give students options of strategies, tools, and/or extension activities.

⭐️ Get this FREE College and Career Readiness Curriculum Planning Guide to help you decide how to use the products in this bundle. You might also want to get my FREE AVID Scope and Sequence and one of my free AVID pacing guides (good for any college and career readiness class--not for just AVID classes):
