Reading closely means reading for meaning and understanding. Close reading requires students to read, look, listen more slowly, noticing details, making connections, and asking questions.
Close reading takes practice and needs to be practiced regularly. This is why Music Monday or Tune Tuesday is the perfect “scheduled” close reading practice each week.
These strategies taught through high interest song lyrics will be engaging and make students want to dig deeper. These strategies will transfer over to other texts.
Reading lyrics (poetry to music) is like readers going on a scavenger hunt, uncovering the layers of meaning. As students close read, they analyze the text by reading it multiple times.
