Description

Close Reading Reflections: A Journaling, Annotating and and Text Analysis Unit

Reflection Journaling is a low-risk, high-interest annotation strategy.

It’s easy for teachers and fun for students.

When students are simply asked to reflect on a chapter, a character, an article, an issue, or an event, the fear of giving an incorrect answer disappears.

Here’s how it works: Students record thoughts, questions and observations while reading. The teacher can quickly assess the depth of student understanding by scanning their questions and comments.

After students have completed several reflection pages and discussed their ideas, they’ll select one and use their notes to write a reflection paper (aka text analysis).

Struggling writers may use the Cheat Sheet to help them write the reflection paper.

Peer Revision Logs allow students of all ability levels to critique one another’s papers before completing final drafts.
