Description

This 12 slide Math Activ Studio flipchart teaches students to classify and sort shapes by more than one attribute. This lesson is aligned with the Houghton Mifflin Math Series, 7.3 - 1st grade. The lesson begins with the "Problem of the Day" in which students are given a rule regarding the 3 objects shown and must determine which object does not belong while following the rule. Next, the flipchart displays the daily objective along with a higher order thinking prompt about the importance of the concepts they are about to learn. Then, students are given vocabulary terms needed to understand the content of the lesson: side, corner, square, circle, rectangle, and triangle, along with definitions, examples, and pictures. The vocabulary is then extended by showing the shapes labeled by sides and corners, and students are asked to determine how they are like, how they are different, and where you might see these shapes in the environment. The lesson then moves onto "open" and "closed" figures by showing comparison pictures of each type. The next slide is a sorting activity, inviting students to help a boy clean his room and put shapes away with 4 corners (the rule). The next is another sorting activity, but with a different rule. Each of these activities have visual manipulatives that students may move around to sort as a class, individually, in groups, or with a partner. The next couple of pages show shapes sorted and students must "guess the rule." The next page is a set of 3 "showdown" activities in which the teacher can put the "blinder screen" (located in the toolbar) up and when she pulls it down revealing the first description, the students are to draw the shape being described on their marker board or paper, and when the teacher calls "showdown" the students hold up their shape. The next page is a partner activity "sort with a friend" in which students are asked to turn to their shoulder partner, come up with a rule, have their partner guess their rule, and then switch. The students are then given a list of guided and individual work to complete (aligned with the textbook directions). The next page allows one last class problem for review and closure in which they must explain what they know about how to sort shapes. Last is drawing math journal activity.
