Description

This 10 slide Math Activ Studio flipchart teaches students to classify, sort, and compare objects by one attribute (color, size, or shape). This lesson is aligned with the Houghton Mifflin Math Series, 7.1 - 1st grade. This lesson begins with the "Problem of the Day" in which students are to use critical thinking to solve the daily word problem. Next, the flipchart displays the daily objective, then reviews vocabulary terms needed to understand the content of the lesson: sort, and students are provided with examples and visual on how to sort objects. Students can brainstorm, then come up to the board and move the objects around on the Promethean Board to sort them. The next slide gives the students a variety of different mittens, in which students may break up into partners or groups (or individually) and determine different ways of sorting the mittens, upon completion, the teacher can call on volunteer to come up the board and sort the mittens. The next 3 slides displays the mittens shaped by color, then size, then shape and each time, the students must determine how each set is sorted. The next activity shows a variety of bears (panda bears, grizzly bears, and teddy bears) that have a variety of attributes, and students are invited to sort the bears. The students are then given a list of guided and individual work to complete (aligned with the textbook directions). The next page is a review and closure question invited the class to demonstrate what they've learned and apply to sorting children in the class. The last page is a math journal entry in which students must draw a picture and show how to sort the specified object.
