Description

Click here for directions for set up as well as a preview!

One of my students' FAVORITE book series is The World According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney. This Class Pet Weekend Journal with Humphrey is just the thing we needed to continue our adventures with Humphrey outside of the classroom!

In the book, Humphrey, the class pet, gets to go home with a different student each weekend. As you can imagine, it is always and adventure! Humphrey usually learns something new about the student and helps them solve some sort of problem. My students begged me for a class pet, but with so many allergies, I opted for the next best thing!

That's when I created our very own Weekend Adventures with Humphrey binder to send home with one student every Friday. With the binder, they also get to take home a stuffed Humphrey in his very own pet carrier! I put everything in a canvas bag and include some books about hamsters for them to enjoy as well.

On Monday mornings, the student who spent the weekend with Humphrey brings everything back, including the binder with their new journal entry. We all listen to them share ALL about their weekend adventures with Humphrey during our morning meeting! It is A MAJOR HIT!

*2020: Updated to include a "hands-free" version of this project. If unable to send home shared items, teachers can send home a "Flat Humphrey" option.

*1/28/24: Now includes an editable PowerPoint version and alternate wording options on student pages.

  • A blank sticker page (if you choose to use the Amazon sticker suggestion in the directions)

Here's to a successful school year!
