Description

Looking for an engaging activity to build CER writing skills? This quick and simple hands on activity for students investigates sound waves and supports writing strong scientific arguments with Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning.

The students make noisemakers out of different lengths of straws and investigate how the length of the straw affects the pitch. They make observations during the activity and then write a scientific argument with Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning - CER based on their observations using a short reading passage for support.

Materials Needed: Just straws and scissors!!

What's Included?

- Student handout to complete Prediction, Procedure, Data Table, and a Scientific Argument for the conclusion.

- Teacher notes

- A Teacher presentation to guide students through the activity

- A focused section of reading about soundwaves to help students complete the reasoning section of the argument.

Great to introduce waves and Aligned to support NGSS Standard:

4-PS4-1. Develop a model of waves to describe patterns in terms of amplitude and wavelength and that waves can cause objects to move.

This activity is part of my C-E-R Physical Science Bundle . Buy more get a great price!

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
NGSSMS-PS4-1
Use mathematical representations to describe a simple model for waves that includes how the amplitude of a wave is related to the energy in a wave. Emphasis is on describing waves with both qualitative and quantitative thinking. Assessment does not include electromagnetic waves and is limited to standard repeating waves.
NGSS4-PS4-1
Develop a model of waves to describe patterns in terms of amplitude and wavelength and that waves can cause objects to move. Examples of models could include diagrams, analogies, and physical models using wire to illustrate wavelength and amplitude of waves. Assessment does not include interference effects, electromagnetic waves, non-periodic waves, or quantitative models of amplitude and wavelength.
