What educators are saying
Description
I am constantly looking for ways to connect ELA and Science or Social Studies for our 5th graders. In the state of Ohio, 5th graders are tasked with a History Strand that details learning about Early Indian Civilizations. Our information on the Mississippian group is limited, so our resources cover the Inca, Maya and Aztec groups.
It is my hope that you get two things from this unit:
1. Students reading a lot of informational text
2. Students writing quality informational writing about a topic using more than one source
Social Studies History Standard for Ohio:
2- Early Indian civilizations (Maya, Inca, Aztec, Mississippian) existed in the Western Hemisphere prior to the arrival of Europeans. These civilizations had developed unique governments, social structures, religions, technologies, and agricultural practices.
ELA Standards
RI.5.1 W.5.2.A
RI.5.4 W.5.2.B
RI.5.7 W.5.2.D

The reference texts are not included in this purchase. However, the texts I reference can be download for free by searching for Maya, Aztec and Inca texts on ReadWorks. ReadWorks is a free website for educators. The other core resource is Core Knowledge's Free Social Studies Curriculum Unit on Civilizations. You will need to sign up for their resources (for free!) to access the curriculum.
