Resource #1: Civil Rights - Martin Luther King and Malcolm X - Ideas (Collaborative Lesson)

This 15 page Civil Rights teaching resource is an excellent collaborative lesson for teaching the main ideas/beliefs/views of both Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X in relation to the Civil Rights Movement. This resource includes a detailed teacher guide on how to facilitate the collaborative lesson and offers descriptions for extension of the activity and also for differentiation of use.

This Civil Rights collaborative lesson centers on students breaking into groups and analyzing six quotes (primary sources) from both Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X related to the following themes of the Civil Rights Movement: integration in society and the use of violence. Students will be tasked with identifying which of the two men (Martin Luther King Jr. or Malcolm X) stated the quote, and then create rationale or a justification for their reasoning. This is an excellent tool to use after students have already begun to learn about the Civil Rights Movement and have a basic understanding of both Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.

The teacher guide explain how to facilitate this collaborative lesson and the concluding class discussion/debate between the differing Civil Rights ideas/views/beliefs of both Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.

This Civil Rights assignment includes websites for both Martin Luther King and Malcolm X that can be used to complete research on the Civil Rights related beliefs and values of each. Students will then use the information to complete the Venn diagram in order to compare and contrast the two in terms of how they viewed the empowerment of African Americans during the Civil Rights.
