    Why I Created This Resource

After students returned to the classroom, I witnessed an increased need to focus on community and citizenship--perhaps I'm not alone. :)

Have students self-assess and meet with them periodically to discuss their future citizenship goals. Much like in a writing conference, pull them aside individually and ask: What are you working on right now? Use the concrete rubric and citizenship card to direct the conversation. Praise them liberally (e.g. “I love how you…”) Frame tips as an invitation: “I wonder if you could try…” Make the assessment weekly, monthly, quarterly--whatever you choose.

Moreover, the entire class can set citizenship goals. Ask: What do we do well? What do we need to continue to work on? Their honesty always astounds!

Make the Citizenship Card into a giant poster. I put on mine of my door to remind students of their shared academic and citizenship goals. I also made colored copies for students to keep in their binders. For my own records and sanity, I created a paper Citizenship Tracker.

I hope you find it useful! Invest in community building throughout the year to foster community, leadership, accountability, and fun. Follow me for more teacher and tutor tools. Happy teaching! Get your weekends back.
