Description

Enjoy these 8 book companion extension activities! These activities are perfect for Back to School, or for any time of the year.

LANGUAGE ARTS ACTIVITIES:

- Word Work with Chrysanthemum

Students cut out and rearrange the letters in Chrysanthemum's name to build new words. Then, students choose three words they built and use them in a sentence.

- Superb Summary

Students complete a summary organizer (Someone, Wanted, But, So, Then) and then write a summary paragraph.

- Comparing and Contrasting Chrysanthemum

Differentiated Venn Diagram organizers for both drawing and writing. Students can compare & contrast Chrysanthemum with another character from the story, or choose 2 characters to compare & contrast.

- Chrysanthemum’s Character Traits

Students record Chrysanthemum's character traits on a brainstorming web. Then, students can name three character traits Chrysanthemum has and write/draw evidence from the story.

- Chrysanthemum’s Sensational Sequencing

Students cut out story events and glue them in the correct order on the opposite side of the page.

- Chrysanthemum’s Changing Feelings

Students identify a feeling word to describe how Chrysanthemum felt at the beginning and the end of the story and support ideas by writing about or illustrating specific events from the story.

MATH ACTIVITIES:

- Numbers in Our Names: Letters in Name Tally/Graph

Students collect data and count the letters in each of their classmates' names. Then, students tally, graph, and interpret data.

- Mailbox Math

* Shoutout to the lovely Cara Carroll for this wonderful activity concept!

Included are 2 letters from Chrysanthemum to students in the class asking for help with a problem! Perfect for integrating shared reading and writing with math.

Students then complete the corresponding story problem insert as independent practice.
