What educators are saying

This was a fantastic activity. We used it to set up a Socratic Seminar in class and we had a great class discussion about whether Columbus should be considered a hero or a villian.
My students really enjoyed the passages/ videos and being able to make informed decisions on their opinion.

Description

Christopher Columbus: Hero or Villain- A Google Slides Activity

This is a primary source activity where students examine Columbus' letters, watch 2 short videos on what Columbus Days means, and then get to decide if Columbus was a hero or villain, based on EVIDENCE!

This is an ELA teacher's dream even though it is a Social Studies activity! Because it takes students through the process of seeing both sides but ultimately deciding and WRITING their opinion.

I always look forward to this activity because the students really seem to have strong opinions at the end of the unit, one way or another!

You will be provided with a google slides link to make a copy of my google slide, which means it is totally EDITABLE and you can add to it or use it alone. Because it is a google slides activity, it can be assigned to students online with almost any online platform!

2022 UPDATE- As teachers, we should always reflect on our teaching practices. While I loved the activity I had, I felt the need to take it further with my kids. So I asked myself, why should my students learn this material? How will they apply this to the real world? So, I wanted them to develop a skill they could take with them, which is the new edition to this activity! Designing a museum exhibit!
