Description

This Christmas writing prompts resource includes 15 Christmas themed prompts to get students thinking and writing about Christmas and the associated experiences and activities. There are 5 writing prompts for each of the following categories: opinion writing, informative/explanatory writing, and narrative writing.

We have also included mini versions of each writing prompt that can easily be pasted into an interactive notebook or writing journal and completed therein. Additionally, there is a cover page that can be colored by the students and stapled to their completed writing prompts.

Opinion Writing Prompts

  • How early should cities, stores, or people start decorating for Christmas? Why?
  • What is the best TV show or movie to watch to get into the Christmas spirit? How does it affect you?
  • What places or people should be visited during the holiday season?
  • Who should do the shopping, the cards, the decorating, the food preparations, etc. in your family? Why?
  • How should the Christmas season be expressed in the classroom? What issues may arise?

Informative/Explanatory Writing Prompts

  • How does your family prepare for the Christmas holiday?
  • The holiday spirit includes thoughts of hope and goodwill. Explain how you can make the world a better place.
  • How does your family stick to a budget, but still give gifts that are appreciated?
  • How do you show respect for other holiday traditions outside of your own?
  • Tell about your favorite family Christmas tradition. Explain how it makes you feel.

Narrative Writing Prompts

  • Think of your best friend. Plan a wonderful holiday surprise for your friend. What would it include?
  • Think of the best Christmas ever. Write to tell what happened to make it so.
