What educators are saying

This was a great activity for my students today. I printed out the puzzles and put them in envelopes with the different cabinet labels. I started everyone (working in pairs) off on Blue. After I signed off that they solved the Blue cabinet puzzle, I let them choose which cabinet to solve next.
I used this with my 4th grade enrichment group. It was engaging and a good fit that included both math and reading. Highly recommend!

Description

This Christmas escape room activity is a super fun and engaging way for students to practice math and reading skills! This escape is designed for 4th grade (would be very challenging for most 3rd graders).

The goal of this activity is to help Santa save Christmas and escape from the North Pole, so he can finally get to his vacation in sunny Florida!

Begin by reading an entertaining storyline that explains how everything has gone wrong at the North Pole. It is your students' mission to help Santa find the tools he needs to fix all the problems. Unfortunately, they are all locked up and Santa has forgotten the codes. The only way to save Christmas is by solving puzzles that will unlock each cabinet that holds the required tools.

Each puzzle has its own task. These include:

  • Solving one- and two-step word problems using all four operations
  • Adding decimals (requires regrouping)
  • Elapsed time
  • Reading informational text and answering text-based questions
  • Using context clues to understand word meaning
  • Understanding figurative language (similes)
  • Synonyms

Everything is included to set up your escape room:

  • Lock cards
  • Puzzle sheets for each room
  • Recording sheets
  • Answer keys
  • Teacher directions
  • Student directions
  • Digital task sheets

This 4th grade escape room has 2 options for the secret codes:

  • Using a device, students enter their answers in Google Forms
  • Students check their answers against the teacher's answer key

You can choose whichever option works best for your classroom. The Google Forms option does not require students to sign in or use any personal information. You do not need a Google account. They will simply enter their answers in the form. If it is correct, the form gives them the next clue.

DIGITAL PAGES

All 5 puzzle pages have been prepared for use in Easel if you wish to assign these as digital worksheets.

This Christmas escape room activity is very easy to implement. There aren't a bunch of pieces to put together and organize. It allows you to review a lot of skills in one fun activity!
