Description
Looking to engage your upper elementary students this December? These activities include a Christmas Around the World Research Project, Elf Movie Math and Viewing Guide, a Multi-Digit Multiplication Math Mystery, and Long Division Task Cards & Scavenger Hunt. They are sure to fill all the holes in your pre-vacation lesson plans!
Christmas Around the World asks students to choose a country, and then complete five categories of guided research questions on Christmas traditions in that country. For ten popular countries, 3-4 sources are linked to provided easy access to pertinent information. Or, students can choose their own country and use suggested search terms to find the information on their own.
Also included in this resource is a 6-slide presentation template for students to compile their findings, and a completed sample for you to model. A rubric and summary page are also provided to give you everything you need for a successful research unit.
Elf Movie Math & Viewing Guide provides two levels of math (one appropriate for grades 4-5, and another for 6+), with ten questions each. The questions are aligned with the movie and go in chronological order. A 20-question chronological viewing guide is also included, as well as a bonus growth mindset worksheet for students to reflect on the characters in the story. Keys are provided.
In the Christmas Math Mystery, students are presented with the problem of helping Santa figure out where he left his bag of toys. Each 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication problem that they complete will give them a clue, which will then enable them to eliminate one possibility for the location of his bag. This is a great opportunity for students to work in pairs or threes, gets them up and moving, and really flexes their critical thinking skills! Answer key provided.
The last resource included is a Christmas Long Division Task Card & Scavenger Hunt activity. 24 task cards are included at two different levels for easy differentiation. Additionally, an eight-card scavenger hunt takes students out of their seats and around the room to solve a Christmas riddle. For your early finishers, a bonus extra-practice worksheet is included, along with keys for everything.
These activities will surely round out the last week or two before Christmas break, will engage students with relevant skills and seasonal activities, as well as provide an opportunity to spiral-back on some skills that may need a refresher. Your kids will think they're having fun, but you'll know they're working hard on necessary and pertinent tasks!
