Description

Need an independent work packet, perhaps for a substitute, distance learning, or for a holiday break? Are you teaching the Ancient Chinese philosophies? Want to clarify the differences between Daoism, Confucianism, and Legalism? Do you value students grappling with real quotations? Download this resource!

Highlights:

  • Independent Work: This resource is designed to be accessible for students to work on independently at their own pace, BUT can also be adapted as a collaborative or teacher-led assignment.
  • NO PREP! Ready-to-Go: This packet is ready to immediately print and give to your students
  • Thorough Practice with Chinese Philosophies: There is a total of six different activities covering the philosophies: Daoism, Confucianism and Legalism.
  • Primary Source Quotes: Activity 2 has students rephrase primary source quotations from the philosophers, selected to be manageable for middle school students working independently.
  • Relevant Real-Life Applications for Adolescents: Activities 5 & 6 apply the philosophies to real-life situations, and to the students’ own lives.
  • Rigor: The activities gradually build on each other to have students grapple with a range of cognitive work (Bloom’s Taxonomy), beginning by introducing the philosophies and asking comprehension questions, and later applying and evaluating the philosophies so they can develop their own perspectives on the philosophers’ beliefs.
  • Answer Key Included: Answers to multiple-choice and ideal responses to short answers.
  • Ink-Saving Black & White version included

Suggested Objective: Students will master grade-level knowledge of the Ancient Chinese philosophies of Daoism, Confucianism and Legalism by independently reading and comprehending passages on the philosophies, rephrasing primary source quotations, explaining the effect of philosophy on government, applying the philosophies to real-world situations, and evaluating which philosophy is most appropriate in a given scenario.

Suggested Time: 2 45 min classes, also great for distance learning, homework or break work!

*Please note that an online version is available (link below)* This is an independent work packet I’ve used with my classes for Spring Break work. While providing multiple activities in order to reinforce content, they are also designed to “chunk” the work into manageable sizes for students to handle on their own. The inclusion of a checklist on the front page lets students monitor their rate of completion and provides visible progress to help keep them motivated on their task.
