Characteristics of Civilizations (12-14 Lessons) (Grade 4-6)

The 'Characteristics of Civilizations' course teaches students (10/11 year old) about the emergence of the first civilizations and 7 essential characteristics that they all share. It also teaches important concepts related to government, religion and society which will help them with other history, geography and civics topics. The goal of this course is to build a foundation of important key words and concepts that they can use to discuss and learn about human societies.

Teaching the 7 characteristics and reviewing the content will take about 10-12 lessons. To conclude the course, students will create their own civilizations based on the 7 characteristics. This project will be assessed with a rubric.
