    Description

Wondering where to even begin with teaching realistic fiction writing to your class? It can be such an abstract concept of writing and in order to be successful, you MUST have a strong character and solid, paced plan driving the piece of writing. That's where this resource comes in. Stacked with loads of prompts and outlines to help kids dive deep, narrative writing has never gone smoother.

A strong piece of fiction starts with a solid character and that's where the first resource comes in. It will guide your students into understanding external and internal characteristics and help them develop their own solid characters. Next, students will take the strong characters they create and assign them a problem or motivation. This will drive how the story gets organized into the five main parts (beginning, problem/motivation, climax, solution/result, ending). The story arc planners provided allow students to create and plan five sections of their story to ensure their story comes out balanced and that it is thought out from start to finish.

    Description of Resource 1:

Character Traits Planners for Creating Characters in Fiction Writing

Broken up into four distinct parts, the resource first provides a glossary of internal and external characteristics for discussion and reference. Next, the resource works to have students connect to characters they love and also map people and themselves as characters for practice. Finally the last two sections each focus on external and internal characteristic development.

    Description of Resource 2:

Realistic Fiction and Narrative Writing Story Arc Planners

This planner helps students map out the five main parts of a story arc needed to plan a full narrative or realistic fiction piece of writing. It includes a resource page that explains each of the steps as "small moments" as a resource and the other page is the planner itself for the kids. The second set of pages is also a resource and a planner for kids, but refers to the sections of planning as "chapters" depending on how you want to approach the planning process with students.

    Ideal For:

Teachers looking to help guide their students to fiction writing success from the start! This format is quick, simple and visual and allows teachers to very quickly conference with students to ensure that they are on track before diving deeper into their writing.
