Cell Membrane Transport Manipulative Activity Digital and Printable
What educators are saying
Description
Looking for an engaging, hands-on manipulative to teach types of cell membrane transport such as simple diffusion, facilitated diffusion, and osmosis? This interactive model activity, which can be used face-to-face and virtually, helps student conceptually understand how concentration gradients are involved in the movement of molecules across a cell membrane. The newly added digital version creates a no-prep option for this powerful activity.
Overview
In this activity, students are expected to recognize and identify components of a cell membrane as well as construct a membrane correctly using cutouts of the components. After building and labeling the cell membrane components, students will be given a set of “concentration situations” that they must set up using the cutout molecule pieces. They will then use the labeled arrow cutouts to show what movement will take place in that specific situation. In this manipulative activity, they will model the following types of movement: simple passive diffusion, osmosis, facilitated diffusion, and active transport.
This is a great hands-on activity that helps students conceptually understand the different types of movement across a cell membrane. Membrane transport is such an intangible idea because it happens on such a small scale. This interactive lesson turns membrane transport into a tangible concept. It helps students conceptually understand osmosis, a concept that students traditionally struggle with. This is an excellent lesson for your visual, kinesthetic, and English Language learners. In addition to the manipulative cutouts, there is also a student assessment sheet, a key, and teacher instructions with diagrams to help explain the activity.
